How to Be Creative When You’re Worried About Money
The short answer is, you can’t.
I was once in this situation and learned a thing or two about creating while being worried about money, and whether that is even possible at all.
Creativity is not just a human activity whereby we generate or innovate something.
Creativity is actually a goddess act. Worrying about money is a human act.
Being able to create is the closest thing that humans can do to experience their divine feminine nature because it puts you in touch with this skill of creating something valuable where none before existed.
Creativity, to me, is a very exhilarating and passionate energy. It feels like riding on the crest of a wave and there is this unseen force that guides a project to completion.
During creation, there’s also an incredible momentum: the more energy you exert, the more energy comes back to you. It feels like being plugged into this heightened electricity and all of the cells and organs in our bodies are suddenly singing in harmony and on fire. Everything we touch becomes gold.
In this state, we also lose all track of time and enter into a trance. Worries melt away because being connected to all the infinite possibilities in the universe feels far stronger, more real, and more nourishing than feeling the fear. Your body, mind, and energy expand.
Contrast this with worrying about money, which brings your body down into a contraction. Thoughts consume your mind. It’s not available to help you process the creative energy that you may be trying to access. Instead, the mind pulls you far away from creative energy. As the mind searches and searches for safety, it brings about a sinking, nervous, and unsettled feeling.
I also find that when we are frustrated with our level or pace of creativity, it has to do with losing patience with oneself, as if we are running out of time, ideas and opportunities. If we can’t be creative in a hurry, imagine how many golden opportunities we may have missed, we think. This is a fear of loss.
What really stops the flow of creativity is a sense of urgency while worrying about money.
The looming thought of having to pay bills or “make something happen” can set our panic into overdrive. But this point, we may as well forget about creating. Now we are simply trying to survive.
This isn’t the same as performing under pressure, which some people prefer to do. This is about feeling like you have to be creative, or die, as if creativity is a life or death situation. We might even start to believe that our family members will suffer (or die) if we can’t be creative on cue.
Needless to say, this doesn’t make creating fun at all, and I don’t feel it’s even possible to be creative while worrying about money at the same time.
Then what can you do?
The first thing to do is to assess the actual level of urgency. Are you truly in an emergency situation or is your mind telling you that you are in one? When we are panicking about money, we tend to distort the amount of time or opportunities that we may have. For example, if we have two months to create something or make money, emotionally we may feel as if we only have two days because we don’t believe in our own power or that the divine will help. Our perception of time and opportunities is completely distorted.
Most of the time, I find that the urgency is in our minds only. The mind, so at odds with the unknown, is desperately seeking safety and it won’t rest until it finds it. What the mind cannot fathom is that creation defies time and logic. The most magical of creations can and often happen in an instant. Your whole life or project can completely change trajectories that the mind can never plan or expect.
If your situation is not a true emergency, relax! Create! Listen to your intuition and flow! Once you relax, you’ll naturally redirect all of the energy that you previously spent on worrying to go into passion, exhilaration and adventure mode.
Without a worried mind, you are free to allow all possibilities to come into your realm.
Personally, once I get into the creative zone, I don’t worry about anything else because my connection to the universe’s infinite possibilities brings me feelings of abundance, success, doors flying open, and perpetual yeses — not lack, failure, closed doors, and nos.
The next time that you’re trying to create while being worried about money, know that if your energy tries to go in opposite directions at once, you’ll likely stay where you are. Take time to release these feelings: are you truly in an emergency situation? Are you truly running out time? Are you losing patience with yourself? Do you feel like you’ll miss out if you don’t be creative fast? Do you feel you need to be creative, or else die, or watch your family suffer?
These are all great questions to ask yourself the next time your worried mind gets you off track.
