This was the question I struggled with recently. We know that our lives, our dreams, our relationships, fear, love, heaven, hell, and everything and anything we can think of is simply part of the game of life. None of this is real. It’s all an illusion.

And if that is the case, then I wonder why should we even bother? Why should we bother speaking up or out or standing up against injustice? Why should we bother to pursue more comfortable and abundant lives? Why should we bother eating healthy, exercising, or making an effort with relationships? Why bother healing or making our dreams come true?

If this is all an illusion and none of this is real, should we even devote the time, effort, and energy it takes to realize the circumstances we desire to experience?

A friend shared with me his perspective. He said that even though this is a game, we need this game. This game is the path to us waking up to who we are, which is Infinite Source.

This makes sense to me. We often need ‘games’ in order for us to learn because games involve all of our senses and push us to problem–solve, think on our feet, rise above our comfort zones, and expand us into unchartered territories, which all are designed to move us away from who we think we are and what we think our reality is.

If this game didn’t exist, we wouldn’t get to play and get involved with Life.

So then, what would be the approach to life while knowing that everything is a game, none of it is real, and yet your evolution depends on playing this game?

What I learned is that we need to play this game to our maximum potential and with serious involvement yet also knowing at the same time that this is a game.

Involvement means that we do put our hearts on the line. We do risk comfort for fun and adventure. We do risk getting our hearts broken. We do speak up and heal ourselves and change things. We do take action on the difficult and the inconvenient. We do give it our all.

But yet at the same time, we rest in knowing that none of this is real. But yet we play like it is real.

Understanding this has helped me adjust in how I approach my work, my dreams, and where I put my time and attention. For example, knowing this has helped me get even more involved with life itself. I long to expand my reach toward more people and communities and use my voice in a bigger way. It’s also helped me to release the pressure I put on myself to make my dreams come true because dream–making itself is a game, too. If it’s a game, I get to have fun and I also choose to enter the playground when the time and factors are the best suited for me.

So there we have it. We engage with Life with absolute involvement yet while knowing this is a simulation. On some days, it is a balancing act to dance in this position. Sometimes, we might feel grossly attached to certain outcomes or we might shy away from getting involved with things due to resistance to certain consequences.

But I’m finding that Life gets much richer when we say yes. We may not like the path or the outcome, but we wouldn’t know that unless we said yes and we rolled up our sleeves and tried. I feel it’s a wonderful thing to get more involved with Life because it is through that where we feel more alive.

Life, I gather, is a series of responses and the opportunities to respond. When we are dead, we are unresponsive and don’t get to respond anymore. The fun seems to be the act of responding! We get to dance through life instead of sleeping through it. How beautiful is that?
